Adidas Red Gazelle
The adidas Red Gazelle is one of the model's historic colorways, and probably one of the most visually striking. Bright red, deep burgundy, brick red, or scarlet red: each shade offers a different interpretation of a silhouette that has nothing left to prove. On The Last Step, you'll find the most coveted red variations of the Gazelle, in sizes often out of stock at classic retailers, and with an authenticated pair guaranteed. Worn by Liam Gallagher in the 90s, spotted on all British terraces during the same era, the Red Gazelle embodies a quiet nostalgia and a true ability to energize any contemporary outfit. On this model, red doesn't shout. It makes a statement.
The history of a red that became a signature
The Gazelle was born in 1968 in Herzogenaurach, originally conceived as a multi-sport training shoe. Very quickly, it transitioned into popular culture, adopted by footballers in hotel rooms, Californian skaters, and New York rappers. Red accompanied this journey from the very first years. Adidas offered it in several shades, but it was primarily in British culture of the 80s and 90s that the color took on a particular dimension.
Britpop sealed the deal. Liam Gallagher, Oasis frontman, wore the Red Gazelle on stage and on the street, at a time when the model became a strong identity marker in English terrace culture. The pair entered a pop mythology that far transcended sports. Today, red remains one of the model's most iconic colorways, and its return in recent seasons confirms one thing: the Red Gazelle never really left the rotation.
Visual signature: why red works so well on the Gazelle
The secret lies in the suede. On a smooth material, red can quickly become gaudy or plasticky. On matte suede, it retains a velvety depth that softens the shade without dulling it. Suede absorbs light, re-emits it in fragments, and gives red a texture that no other material reproduces as well.
Regarding shades, here are the main red variations found on the Gazelle:
- Scarlet / bright red, the most iconic, inherited from the model's original colorways
- Burgundy, deeper and more formal, ideal for autumnal outfits
- Brick red / terra, more earthy, playing with workwear codes
- Cherry red, more saturated, halfway between scarlet and carmine
The details (white or cream three stripes, trefoil, tongue, gum sole) punctuate the shade and give it that graphic contrast typical of the adidas silhouette. It's this balance between saturation and contrast that makes the pair so photogenic.
Adidas Red Gazelle: how to wear it without overdoing it
Red is a shade that requires a setting. Too many other colors around it, and the pair loses its focal point role. Too few, and it can lean towards being a gimmick. Three approaches work particularly well.
First, the neutral total look. With raw baggy jeans, an oversized white t-shirt, and a beige or cream cap, the Red Gazelle becomes the element that awakens the entire outfit. This is probably the most effective everyday combo. Then, warm tone-on-tone. Burgundy or brick red surprisingly pair well with khaki cargo pants or a cream hoodie, which set a neutral base and allow the shade to breathe. Finally, assumed contrast. Dark denim shorts with pulled-up white high socks particularly highlight red, especially on bright shades.
For fans of casual tailoring, the burgundy Red Gazelle can also be worn with straight black trousers or a grey suit, for a more dressed-up interpretation. And for more distinctive silhouettes, scarlet red works very well as a pop nod on an all-black outfit.
Sizing advice
The Gazelle fits quite true to size, and the suede version tends to mold to your foot after a few wears. If you have wide feet or are in between sizes, take the larger size. Red, especially in bright shades, shows stains more easily than neutral colors. Remember to apply a waterproofing spray right out of the box and use a dry suede brush for routine maintenance. For localized stains, a special suede eraser is sufficient in most cases.
