Nike Shox TL Hyper Royal adds electric blue to one of the most recognizable soles in the Nike catalog. Columns. Everywhere, from heel to toe. This has been the principle of the Shox TL since 2003: where the Shox R4 kept its springs in the back, the TL extends them across the entire length of the foot, with moderator plates between the columns to absorb impact. Nike calls it mechanical cushioning, and the formula still holds up twenty years later.
The current version is, according to Nike, an almost exact replica of the 2003 pair: breathable mesh on the upper, full-length TPU cage, molded overlays on the midfoot for support, and a solid rubber outsole with a modified waffle pattern. The official colorway, Hyper Royal/Black/Metallic Silver, dresses the mesh in a deep royal blue, highlights the Swoosh and rear plate with metallic silver, and leaves the columns in the same blue as the upper. The monochromatic effect makes the mechanics of the sole stand out.
Nike has not detailed the inspiration for this colorway. Sneaker outlets view it as either a nod to the blue of New York teams or an echo of the Shox R4 seen on Kendrick Lamar. An interpretation, not a fact. What is certain is that the pair can be worn just as well with technical pants as with baggy jeans, for anyone embracing Y2K silhouettes.
