ASICS Gel-Kayano 12.1 Vandy The Pink Vanilla is a vanilla ice cream cone in sneaker form. Junghoon Son, the Korean designer behind Vandy The Pink, had already collaborated with atmos on the Gel-Nimbus 10.1 Banana Split and Strawberry. This time, he takes on the Gel-Kayano 12.1 with an Ice Cream pack in two flavors: Vanilla, for the global release, and Chocolate, exclusive to the Vandy website and pop-ups.
The off-white open mesh evokes a waffle cone, the silver panels represent a scoop of ice cream, and the touches of pink, mint green, yellow, and brown act as sprinkles. The sole adopts the colors of Neapolitan ice cream, while the GEL inserts turn green and yellow. Vandy The Pink branding is embroidered on the eyelets and heel, featuring floral tags and co-branded insoles.
The launch took place in several stages: a pop-up in Los Angeles, then New York at Complex, before the wide release at ASICS and a handful of retailers. It is a decadent, bold pair, and among the current Kayano wave, it is one of the few that tells a real story. And it wears much better with light-wash jeans than you might think.
