Autry Medalist Leather Low White Gold Rose, here in its women's version, is the very definition of the old-school tennis sneaker. The Medalist was born in 1982 in Dallas, Texas, when Jim Autry launched his athletic shoe brand; company lore has it that Tennis Magazine named it best sneaker in 1985. The small American flag stitched onto the shoe dates from that era. Dormant for years, the brand was relaunched in 2019 by three Italian entrepreneurs who turned it into a lifestyle label, with a careful eye on materials and proportions.
This two-tone version keeps a soft white cowhide leather upper, with a perforated forefoot and a padded collar. The counterpoint comes from the contrasting overlays: a metallic leather, gold with a rosy tint (Autry calls it platinum on its official product page), that catches the light without turning the pair into an evening accessory. Flat cotton laces, a lining that mixes leather and terry, a 2 cm leather insole, and that rubber sole in a slightly aged white that defines the Autry look.
A Medalist that works with straight-leg jeans as well as with a light dress. White stays dominant, while the gold does its work quietly. It comes with a fabric dust bag.
