This brand invented streetwear. And it all started in the trunk of a Californian car.

Not in a showroom. Not in a design studio. In the trunk of a car parked outside a surf trade show, with boxes of t-shirts that a shaper was selling to make ends meet. Forty-five years later, that scribbled signature turns up on Dior pieces, on Nikes and in wardrobes all over the world. Here's how you get from there to here.

1980, Laguna Beach: a shaper who signs his boards

Shawn Stussy makes surfboards. He's good at it, his boards sell well along the Californian coast, and like every shaper, he signs his work. Except his signature looks like no other: a sharp, almost graffiti-like lettering, inspired by that of his uncle Jan, a painter. Surfers start recognising it from a distance.

That's where the idea came from. To promote his boards, Shawn prints the same logo on t-shirts and caps, which he sells at trade shows and out of the trunk of his car. The goal wasn't to create a clothing brand. It was to sell boards.

The t-shirts made more noise than the boards.

It's this very logo, untouched, that you find today on the Stussy Gear Tee White and its version in black : the 1980 signature, exactly as it was, with no retouching. It's probably the brand's simplest tee, and the one most steeped in history.

1984: Frank Sinatra Jr. and scaling up

In 1984, Shawn teams up with Frank Sinatra Jr., an accountant unrelated to the singer, who gives the brand structure. Stüssy becomes a company. But the spirit stays the same: simple clothes, strong graphics and deliberately limited distribution. No department stores, only surf and skate shops and a handful of hand-picked stores.

This is when the graphics that still define the brand are born. The Stock logo. The SS Link, those two interlocking S's inspired by a luxury brand's logo, featured on the SS-Link Tee Green and the SS-Link Dark Red. The Stock Dog, that dog sticking its tongue out, seen on the Stock Dog Tee Olive. And the rounded lettering of the Arched Pig. Dyed Tee, dyed piece by piece using the pigment-dyed technique that Stüssy popularised before anyone else.

These graphics have one thing in common: they subvert. The SS Link borrows from luxury. The Build Tough Tee Black takes a car manufacturer's slogan. The Battery Tee Olive plays with the identity of a battery brand. Stüssy invented this way of doing streetwear with other people's codes, long before it became the norm.

The International Stussy Tribe: the first streetwear community

In the late '80s, Shawn Stussy does something nobody else was doing. He brings together a group of friends from around the world, DJs, skaters, designers, and gives them jackets embroidered with their names. This is the International Stussy Tribe.

Among them are Hiroshi Fujiwara in Tokyo, Michael Kopelman in London, and a certain James Jebbia in New York, who would run the Stüssy store in Manhattan in the very early '90s before founding Supreme in 1994. Most of the brands that matter in streetwear today descend, directly or indirectly, from this tribe.

The word “Worldwide” you see on the Tee Beige Worldwide Diamond comes from there. It's not a slogan, it's a fact: in an era without the Internet, Stüssy already had a global network of stores and partners, from Los Angeles to Tokyo by way of Paris.

1996: the founder leaves, the brand stays

In 1996, Shawn Stussy leaves his own brand. He wants to spend time with his family and get back to his boards. Many predict the end. The opposite happens.

Frank Sinatra Jr. stays the course. Stüssy doesn't try to grow bigger, it tries to last. The collections stay consistent: graphic tees, sweatshirts, caps, a few jackets. Nothing spectacular, but everything stays right. That's why an Established Zip Hoodie Black or a Stock Cuff Beanie from 2026 feel, in spirit, like what the brand was releasing thirty years ago. Stüssy doesn't follow trends. It's the reference that trends are built on.

The cap design hasn't changed either. The Big Basic Trucker Cap and the 3Star Low Pro Strapback are direct descendants of the first caps sold out of the car's trunk.

Nike, Dior, Levi's: when the world comes to Stüssy

The 2000s and 2010s shift the balance of power. It's no longer Stüssy trying to make a name for itself, it's the big houses coming to Stüssy.

Nike first. The collaboration has lasted more than twenty years, with Huaraches, Air Force 1s, Dunks, and regularly technical apparel such as the Stüssy x Nike Primaloft Utility Jacket, which blends Nike's outdoor DNA with the Laguna Beach logo. In our stores, pieces from the Nike x Stüssy collection sit alongside the limited-edition sneakers they're made to go with.

Then Dior, in 2020. Kim Jones invites Shawn Stussy himself, back from retirement, to redraw the Dior logo by hand. A Parisian luxury house asking a Californian shaper to sign its pieces: things have come full circle.

Levi's, Birkenstock, Our Legacy: the collaborations keep coming, and Stüssy remains the only streetwear brand able to work with everyone without ever diluting itself. The white denim jacket available in store is a good example of this ability to engage with the big names in workwear.

Why a Stüssy tee in 2026 isn't just any tee

You could sum Stüssy up as logo tees. That would be missing the point. When you wear a Long Haul Pigment Dyed Tee or a Wizard Tee Green, you're wearing a signature born on a surfboard, a logo that Supreme, Palace and a large part of today's streetwear have taken as their model.

The cut is straight, the cotton is heavy, the dye ages well. These are pieces you keep for ten years. And that's precisely why Stüssy has never needed to make noise. To go further on the brands that wrote this story, our article on Uniqlo x KAWS shows how streetwear now engages with art and mass retail.

Frequently asked questions

Who created Stüssy?

Shawn Stussy, a surfboard shaper in Laguna Beach, California. The brand was born in 1980 when he printed his signature on t-shirts to promote his boards. Frank Sinatra Jr. turned it into a structured company in 1984.

How do you pronounce Stüssy?

“Stoo-see”. The umlaut on the u is decorative; it doesn't change the pronunciation of Shawn Stussy's surname.

Who owns Stüssy?

To our knowledge, Stüssy has remained an independent company, run since the mid-'90s by Frank Sinatra Jr. after buying out the founder's shares. It doesn't belong to any major fashion group.

Does Stüssy run large or small?

The tees have a straight, relaxed fit and are true to size. The heavy cotton may shrink slightly in the wash: if you're between two sizes, go for the larger one. Sweatshirts, caps and beanies fit normally.

Why is Stüssy considered the first streetwear brand?

Because it brought surf, skate and hip-hop together around a logo before anyone else, with limited distribution and a global community (the International Stussy Tribe) as early as the late '80s. Supreme, Palace and A Bathing Ape were all born in its wake.

Where can you buy Stüssy in France?

On the brand's official website during drops, and from selected retailers such as The Last Step, online or in store in Montpellier, Biarritz and Toulouse.

He thought he was selling surfboards. He invented streetwear.
