How does the Air Force One fit?

You wear a 43 in Nike and a pair of Air Force 1s is waiting in your cart. Nike answers the question itself in its size guide. Go for a 42,5.

To adapt this rule to your foot, we went back over the official guide, the product pages and the brand's three size charts on October 17, 2026. One detail of the European chart remains, and it changes the answer for a lot of sizes.

Key takeaways in 30 seconds

·       The Air Force 1 runs large, and Nike says so itself. The brand recommends going half a size down from your usual Nike size.

·       With wide feet, stick with your usual size.

·       On the Nike chart, a half size corresponds to one US size step. In EU sizing, a 42 becomes a 41 and a 43 becomes a 42,5.

·       The "Runs large" note appears on the men's, women's and kids' Air Force 1 '07 product pages. The Mid and Shadow pages carry none.

·       For the same EU size, the women's chart is based on a foot 0,4 to 0,5 cm longer than the men's chart.

Does the Nike Air Force 1 run large?

Yes. The nike.com guide states that the Air Force 1 "generally runs large with its wide toe box, for a relaxed fit". Nike therefore advises going half a size down from your usual Nike shoe size.

Designed by Bruce Kilgore, the AF1 came out in 1982. It was Nike's first basketball shoe with Air cushioning. It keeps a roomy toe box and a leather upper with stitched overlays. That leather stretches over time and molds to your foot. A pair that feels a little snug at the first try-on will feel less so after a few weeks.

What the product pages say

Nike shows a recommendation for each model in the "Size & Fit" tab. We checked it on nike.com/fr.

Which size to choose for your foot?

The right size depends on the width of your foot and the fit you want. The Nike guide always starts from your usual Nike size.

Your situation

Recommended size

What you get

Narrow or regular foot, snug fit

Half a size down

A little tight at first, the leather stretches

Wide feet

Usual size

No need to size down

Relaxed fit

Usual size

More room at the toe, more creasing

Loose lacing, slipped on without unlacing

A full size down

Less slippage at the heel

Thick socks, between two sizes

The larger of the two

More comfort in length

Do you mostly wear another brand? Start again from your foot length. Our comparison of how New Balance fits compared to Nike shows that the same label doesn't always fit the same foot.

The EU half-size trap

"Half a size down" is an American rule. At Nike, each US size goes up by half a point, but the EU size doesn't always follow. The men's chart goes from 41 to 42 with no 41,5, from 43 to 44 with no 43,5, and has no 37.

If you wear a 42 and look for a 41,5 on an Air Force 1 product page, you won't find it. The next size down is 41, which is indeed half a US size smaller. This conversion table follows the official men's chart.

Don't rely on the centimeters printed on the box. Nike points out that they differ from foot length. On a men's 42, the label says 26,5 cm for a 25,8 cm foot.

Women's or kids' Air Force 1: which chart should you use?

A women's AF1 and a men's AF1 in the same EU size carry the same European label. Yet Nike's women's chart is based on a foot 4 to 5 mm longer. At EU 40, it targets a 25 cm foot, compared with 24,5 cm for the men's 40. Measure your foot and read the chart for the model you're buying.

The kids' version, known as GS, stops at 40 and carries the same "Runs large" note. The differences with a women's pair are detailed in our article on Nike junior vs women's sizing.

Air Force 1 Low, Mid, High or Shadow: does it make a difference?

The Nike guide counts shoe height among the factors to consider, with no specific rule for each version.

The Air Force 1 Low carries the "Runs large" note. The half size applies without hesitation, whether in white Air Force 1 or black Air Force 1.

The Air Force 1 Mid adds a padded mid-height collar and a hook-and-loop strap. Its product page carries no note. With a high instep, the strap compensates for some of the volume and your usual size remains a sound choice.

The Air Force 1 High uses the same base in a high-top version, with the same length. Apply the same rule as for the Mid. You'll find our pairs under Air Force 1 High.

The Air Force 1 Shadow, a women's model, sits on an oversized midsole. Nike lists raised soles among the things that can affect sizing. Try it first in your usual size.

How to measure your foot for an AF1?

Allow 5 minutes, at the end of the day, when your foot has reached its full volume.

1.       Tape a sheet of paper to a hard floor so it doesn't slip.

2.       Place your foot on it, with your weight spread over both legs.

3.       Have someone mark the tip of your longest toe and the back of your heel, holding the pencil straight.

4.       Measure the distance in centimeters, then repeat with the other foot and keep the longer measurement.

If you're torn between two sizes, Nike recommends the larger one. On an AF1, that often means sticking with your usual size.

Lacing, socks and creases: Nike's tips

An AF1 that's too big gives itself away quickly. The toe box creases and the heel lifts. Nike also advises against lacing too tightly, to avoid creases on the sides.

An insole tightens the fit, and thick socks make up for a pair that's a bit long. For a toe box that's already creased, our method to clean white Nike sneakers explains how to stuff the pair so it keeps its shape.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nike run large or small?

It depends on the model. According to Nike, the Air Force 1 runs large; for an Air Max or a Dunk, check its own product page.

Should you go up a size for sneakers?

Only if your foot falls between two sizes. On an Air Force 1, Nike actually recommends going down.

I wear a 42 in Nike, what size should I get in Air Force 1?

A 41, since Nike's EU chart has no 41,5. With a wide foot, keep the 42.

Why is there no size 37 at Nike?

The Nike chart follows US sizes. For men, 36,5 corresponds to US 4,5 and 37,5 to US 5. No US size lands on 37.

What's the difference between the Air Force 1 and the Air Force 1 Low?

None in terms of sizing. "Air Force 1" with no further detail almost always refers to the low-top version.

What size should I get in the Air Force One Mid?

Nike shows no note on the Mid '07 product page. It uses the same base as the Low, with a strap that holds the ankle. Narrow foot: go half a size down. Regular or wide foot: keep your usual size.

Keep a note of your foot length in centimeters somewhere. It's what you need to know how Air Force Ones fit, and for all your future Nikes. Our Nike Air Force 1 are in stock, and our team answers sizing questions before you order.
