ASICS Gel-Kayano 12.1 – All Available Pairs
The ASICS Gel-Kayano 12.1 has been one of the most talked-about lifestyle sneakers since its arrival in 2024. Born from a collaboration between ASICS and Ronnie Fieg, KITH's founder, it merges two eras: the upper of the 2006 Gel-Kayano 12 and the more modern sole of the Gel-Nimbus 17. The result ticks all the current trend boxes: Y2K aesthetics, metallic accents, and a technical silhouette worn daily. It's nothing like the current Kayano running shoe; this is pure SportStyle, designed for the streets. Each release, whether a KITH exclusive or a wider availability, sells out quickly. On this page, you'll find Gel-Kayano 12.1s in stock at The Last Step, each authenticated before shipping, in colorways sometimes unavailable elsewhere.
The Gel-Kayano 12.1, Ronnie Fieg's Reinterpretation
Ronnie Fieg has a long history with ASICS. The KITH boss has previously reinterpreted several of the brand's silhouettes (the Gel-Lyte 3.1 is a good example), picking the upper of one model and the sole of another. The Gel-Kayano 12.1 follows this logic: it grafts the upper of the Kayano 12, released in 2006, onto the tooling of a Gel-Nimbus 17.
The detail that speaks to connoisseurs is on the tongues: on the left, a Japanese kanji that reads "Kayano" (a nod to the in-house designer); on the right, the word "Friend," a reference to the brand's slogan "Kith and Kin." Since 2024, the model has become a staple of the most anticipated releases, between KITH exclusives and wider availabilities. To place it within the brand's universe, the ASICS collection brings together the other silhouettes.
Design and Construction of the Gel-Kayano 12.1
Visually, the 12.1 embraces a retro-futuristic vibe. ASICS describes its upper as inspired by European Gothic armor, hence its structured and slightly metallic appearance. Specifically, it features lightweight mesh, synthetic overlays, and the characteristic ASICS stripes on the sides, made here from TPU for this silhouette.
Underfoot, the 12.1 borrows the sole of the Gel-Nimbus 17 and the brand's GEL technology, guaranteeing cushioning. It's this blend (old-school upper, more generous sole) that gives it this premium dad shoe look, halfway between a vintage running shoe and a fashion sneaker. Launch price around $170 depending on the release, a consistent positioning with its status as a sought-after piece.
Colorways, Sizing, and Style
The Gel-Kayano 12.1 comes in a wide palette, often in soft, muted tones that align with current fashion: cream, mineral beige, mint white, carbon gray, obsidian black, not to mention the more colorful KITH packs (the "Loyalty" trio in tan, pink, and blue, for example). Enough to find both a versatile pair and a more assertive colorway.
The model is unisex and fits true to size: go with your usual ASICS size. If in doubt between two sizes, going up half a size is a safe bet for this type of technical silhouette.
In terms of style, the 12.1 is current. It works with baggy jeans, loose cargo pants, joggers, or flowing trousers, for an assertive Y2K look. Add an oversized t-shirt, a cap, and high socks, and the picture is complete. Cream colorways call for light and neutral outfits; dark versions can handle more contrasting associations.

FAQ – ASICS Gel-Kayano 12.1
Is the Gel-Kayano 12.1 a running shoe?

Yes, it fits true to your usual ASICS size. The model is unisex; if you're between two sizes, going up half a size is a safe bet.
