Salomon XT-6
The Salomon XT-6 is a trail shoe that effortlessly left the trails to conquer the streets, without needing to transform. This mountain runner, designed for the planet's most demanding ultra-trails, has, through collaborations and a growing presence in streetwear culture, become one of the most sought-after silhouettes of the moment. On thelaststep.fr, you can find available pairs, authenticated and shipped from our stores in France.
Salomon and the XT-6: The Mountain as its Original Playground
Salomon was founded in 1947 in Annecy, Haute-Savoie, France. Originally, it was a family business specializing in the manufacture of saw blades and ski bindings, an anchoring in the mountains that has never left it. The brand gradually expanded into Nordic skiing, hiking, and then trail running, building a technical reputation among the most demanding outdoor athletes.
The XT series, for Cross Trail, was born from the desire to create shoes capable of absorbing the most hostile terrains while remaining lightweight. The XT-6 is part of this lineage: a running platform designed for ultra-distances, steep slopes, rocks, and mud of competitions like the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) or the Salomon series races. It is a shoe of real performance, not a simulation of performance.
What changed its trajectory was the interest of fashion and streetwear players in this raw, technical aesthetic. MM6 Maison Margiela, Comme des Garçons, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Palace, Sporty & Rich – a series of collaborations with cutting-edge houses and labels propelled the XT-6 into a circuit that Salomon had not anticipated. And the pair followed without flinching, because its construction was self-sufficient.
Construction and Technology: What Makes the XT-6 Functional and Recognizable
The upper is constructed with Sensifit, a Quicklace lacing system combined with an enveloping synthetic cage that supports the foot laterally on technical terrain. The single lace, tightened with a single gesture and stored in a small pocket on the tongue, is one of the shoe's most immediate visual signatures. Practical on the trail, distinctive in the city.
The Contagrip sole is the true heart of the model. This high-grip rubber, specifically developed by Salomon for wet, muddy, and rocky surfaces, produces an outsole with short, closely spaced lugs that grip without getting bogged down. On asphalt, this sole gives a feeling of slight elevation and a firm grip that is comfortable to wear over long urban distances.
The EVA foam in the midsole provides direct cushioning, without complex proprietary technology. The XT-6 is not a padded shoe; it is a reactive shoe that returns energy. Those coming from heavily cushioned silhouettes like Hoka or Brooks may find the transition a bit sharp.
The silhouette is dense, architectural, with that visible external cage on the sides that structures the pair without making it look heavy. Salomon colorways are often sharp – strong contrasts between the upper, cage, and sole – but the brand also plays with more neutral versions (black/black, beige/cream) that integrate better into everyday urban wardrobes.
How to Wear the Salomon XT-6
The XT-6 is a pair that fully embraces its technical origin. There's no point in dressing it up too much; it's not made for tailoring and won't adapt to it. However, it excels in the gorpcore register (that blend of outdoor and streetwear) and in outfits that allow for a bit of visual irregularity.
Technical cargo pants or urban hiking pants, an oversized hoodie, a light softshell jacket: that's its natural territory. In more subdued versions (black, grey, olive), it also works with straight-leg jeans and a clean sweatshirt. The high sole and the Contagrip lugs visible from below add volume to the leg, which should be taken into account if the look aims for discretion.
Sizing: The XT-6 generally fits true to size. The Sensifit and external cage can feel narrow on wide feet; in this case, going up half a size is recommended. The Quicklace system allows for fine adjustment after putting on the shoe without having to reopen and restart the entire lacing. FAQ — Salomon XT-6
Is the Salomon XT-6 really designed for trail running or just for style?
The XT-6 is primarily a trail running shoe designed for ultra-distances on varied terrains. It is worn in competitions like the UTMB. Its adoption in streetwear and fashion collaborations happened without any modification to its construction; it's the same technical shoe, simply embraced by a different audience. Its Contagrip sole, Sensifit, and EVA foam are elements of real performance, not cosmetic references.
Does the Salomon XT-6 fit true to size?
The XT-6 generally fits true to size. The Sensifit external cage slightly tightens the midfoot and can be an issue for wide feet or high insteps. In such cases, going up half a size from your usual size is recommended. The Quicklace system allows for very precise tension adjustment after putting on the shoe, which partly compensates for variations in foot morphology.
What are the most sought-after Salomon XT-6 collaborations?
Several collaborations have marked the recent history of the XT-6: MM6 Maison Margiela (among the most well-known, with all-white or inverted colorway versions), Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, Boris Bidjan Saberi (BBS), Palace Skateboards, Sporty & Rich, and more recently, European streetwear labels. Each collaboration usually reworks the colorways and sometimes the upper materials, while retaining the original technical construction. These versions sell out very quickly and then circulate on the secondary market at significantly higher prices than retail.
How do I care for a Salomon XT-6?
Rinse the sole with cold water after each outing on wet or muddy terrain to protect the Contagrip lugs. The synthetic upper can be cleaned with a soft brush and lukewarm soapy water; avoid aggressive cleaners that can damage synthetic materials. Do not put the pair in a washing machine. Air dry, not in a dryer or near a direct heat source. The Quicklace can be replaced if worn out; Salomon sells replacement kits.
